The ATHENA Award is presented annually by the KC Chamber. The award honors a person “who has achieved the highest level of professional excellence, devoted time and energy to the community, and, especially, opened the doors of leadership opportunity to women.”
The award was created by the Lansing, Michigan, Chamber of Commerce in 1982. Today, the ATHENA Award program includes more than 375 U.S. cities and has recognized more than 2,600 women and men for their accomplishments, community service, and opening pathways for others.
The award is named for Athena, the Greek goddess of intelligence and wisdom, arts and sciences. The award was first presented by the KC Chamber in 2001.
The ATHENA Young Professional Leadership Award is presented to emerging women leaders across professional sectors for exemplary leadership. 2010 was the first year for the Young Professional Leadership distinction of ATHENA.
A selection committee, made up of a diverse group of community leaders, will review all nominations and select one ATHENA Award recipient and one Young Professional ATHENA leadership Award recipient. The recipients will be honored at the annual Kansas City ATHENA Awards Reception.
